Our Hearts Are With Orlando | Pulse Shooting

As an Orlando native, and a citizen of this world, really, my heart is heavy with the tragedy of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. There will be much talk, much gossip, many headlines, news about the shooter, disagreement over gun control and political policy. But in the wake of a tragic event, we need to remember to look for the good. It’s so hard to see in the short term, and it may take quite awhile to become clear. But helpers come out of the chaos, a bigger picture eventually starts to form, and we will see this city rise together in love and unity. In the past day we’ve already seen lines around the block at blood donation centers, strangers delivering food to volunteers and hospital staff who have worked around the clock. Courageous stories of regular people who saved lives on the night of the shooting. Millions of dollars in donations pouring in to be distributed to funds for victims’ families. There are so many people who care. So many who are willing and ready to help strangers in need. I am thankful to live in a place such as this. If you are looking for more ways to help, the city of Orlando has an online interest form to sign up for notifications on where you can be of service.

Jesus commanded us to love each other. John 13:34-35 says this: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

The Bible repeatedly reminds us of this, and regardless of your faith, I’ll bet most of us can agree this is good advice. Whether gay, straight, black, white, Christian, Muslim, Jewish or anything else…let’s find a way to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. Especially in this time of anger, hurt, and fear, but always. Love always wins.
