Your Wedding Stationery Checklist

When you think about your wedding style and priorities, how does wedding stationery fit into the mix? Wedding paper goods have come so far and there are endless options to “brand” your wedding, though many couples still tend to overlook these details in the early planning stages and are hit with lots of decisions and cost late in the game as they add pieces like thank you cards, table numbers, programs and place cards that coordinate with the invitation suite. Before you hit the ground running on this planning adventure, think ahead to the stationery you’ll use, it’s priority/value to you, and how it can work to make your wedding style cohesive. When guests receive the invitation, they begin to see your wedding style unfold, and the tone it sets will carry through the wedding day. So many couples are also sending save the dates now, which these days tend to double as a formal engagement announcement complete with a professional portrait of the bride and groom. Do you need save the dates? Not necessarily, but we do recommend them when many guests are traveling from afar and will need to book tickets and hotel rooms. If you are going to send save the dates, remember you need one per couple/household, not one per person.

When we create timelines for our clients, we always include stationery mailing reminders to keep brides on track. Here’s our recommended wedding stationery timeline:

  • 8 months from the wedding:
    • Order save the dates
    • Start shopping invitations
  • 6-7 months:
    • Send save the dates
  • 6 months:
    • Order invitation suite
    • Speak with a custom map designer if that is something you’re interested in having made
  • 8 weeks:
    • Mail invitations
    • We recommend your RSVP date be set at 3 weeks prior to the wedding, but check with your caterer and rental companies first to see when they need a confirmed headcount
  • 4 weeks:
    • Mail rehearsal dinner/day-after brunch invitations
    • Order programs, favor tags, menus, table numbers and place cards based on your headcount
